The Art of Revolution Spotlight: Brittany Harlin

Now is a time for radical change.
At Uprising Theater, we believe that art is a pillar of revolution. Inherently interactive, it forces society to engage with the perspectives of individual communities. From ten-story murals to fashion, to photography, to dance, art elevates the voice of the people. As a Palestinian American theater company,
our mission has always been to amplify the voices of marginalized communities seeking social justice. As our society faces this exciting movement, we feel it imperative to play a role in passing the mic to Black voices.

Meet the Artist

Brittany Jessica Harlin is a multi-disciplinarian artist, educator, and writer. Her inspirations are pioneers of American Modern Dance, the Hip Hop socio-political movement, and African Diasporan dance. Her work includes collaborative production in dance, music, and poetry. She's a dance educator and award-winning choreographer, striving to bring body awareness, healing, and the necessity & joy of dance.

Harlin continues to connect with fellow creators & leaders in the arts community to enable all who feel called to make independent works. Brittany's next coming project release, "Delinea Renda," incorporates club and street styles through the concert dance lens. It is accompanied by a studio album and a live adaptation from her 2018 MCA Chicago commission, set to be released as an experiential dance film.

Behind the Art

The title of the project refers to a fictional character and moniker of mine, Delinea Renda, derived from the words "delineate" and "render," relating to the articulation of a message inspired by the written form.

My own poetry and prose form the basis of the work, the music, and the choreography, which combines modern dance fundamentals and American African diasporic street dance, such as house, popping, waacking, and hip hop.

I'm collaborating with Chicago composer, musician, and producer, Josh Luis, and sound engineer and producers, Peter Angorola, and Melvin Rosario.
