Uprising Theater dedicated the month of July to amplifying the voices of Black female and non-binary artists. We are happy to announce that we will be extending this initiative into August. If you haven’t already had the opportunity to check out the artists we featured, you can find their marvelous work here.

We are humbled and appreciative of the opportunity to share these artists and their stories. So far, we have featured: DJs, fashion designers, fiber artists, actors, playwrights, and dancers. One exciting note: over half of July’s featured artists also belong to the queer community. It has been inspiring to witness how various voices approach the times we’re living in, how they create beauty, convey individuality, and share their strengths through art.We would like to express enormous gratitude to all of our featured artists, and hope that you can take a peek and get acquainted with some of them.

A very special congratulations to Nambi E. Kelley, an award-winning playwright, and actress featured on July 31st. Nambi mentioned that the month had become quite busy and requested to be featured towards the end of July. We are over the moon to discover the reason she has been so busy: Nambi was commissioned to adapt Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou for Broadway. Learn more about this amazing project here. She is a fierce talent and we’re honored to have been able to showcase her work. Way to go, Nambi!

Special thanks to Chicago Signs, who partnered with us in June to make Uprising Theater t-shirts with proceeds going to this initiative.
