Preschool Education Changes Lives

Magi Fatouleh, Zahrat Al-Yasmeen Kindergarten director, joins students at their graduation in June 2023. Students come mainly from families living in two UN-run camps in the Bethlehem area or from refugee families living nearby the UN-run Aida refugee camp.

Zahrat Al-Yasmeen Kindergarten, located in the UN-run Aida Refugee Camp, has been successful in its first two years of operation. As a result, plans for a third classroom are underway to expand the number of students and families it serves each year. The construction project will provide employment opportunities for 20 nearby Palestinian refugee families. The preschool has already graduated two classes and taught 50 four- and five-year-olds with the help of six teachers and one director. The school is currently fundraising to increase student enrollment by 50%. A groundbreaking ceremony for constructing the third classroom is scheduled for June 19th. The staff and teachers at the school receive ongoing training via remote hookups with teachers in the US. Local government authorities have reviewed the school and praised its child-focused learning environment.
