Uprising Theater has produced a pop-up, immersive theater event called The Joy Clinic. After a successful performance at Wicker Park Fest in July of this year, we will perform next at Navy Pier on Wednesday, August 30th, as part of their final Summer Night Market series. Each Summer Night Market was themed in a specific decade of Chicago's 70s, 80s, and 90s, and in August, the theme is Future Chicago.
The Joy Clinic is an immersive theater experience. Set up as a tent-style battle/field clinic where the staff, all named Joy, treat any interested guest. Guests are prompted to reflect on their mental health status and relationship to joy while in our waiting room space. When ready, guests are welcomed into the clinic by one of the staff. Each guest receives a one-on-one (or small group for families) interaction where they will be prescribed or administered boosts to aid them in their battles in the 'war against misery.' In addition to the experience of engaging in the performance, all guests leave with their evaluation, a boost (whimsey, affirmations, connection/contact, gratitude, grounding, etc. An example image of the Affirmations boost is attached to this email), and a list of free mental health resources available to all IL residents.
In keeping with the Navy Piers Night Market theme of 'Future Chicago,' The Joy Clinic will invite guests to engage in the immersive experience to the level they feel comfortable. Guests experience moments of deep connection, make time to explore joy, and reflect on the importance of mental well-being, all with a strong lean into the future Chicago theme.
The event is free on Navy Piers South doc from 6-9 p.m.
