Jasmine Flower Preschool Fundraiser

  • Uprising Theater 2905 North Milwaukee Avenue Chicago, IL, 60618 United States (map)

Across the West Bank, children lack access to early childhood education. Only one school within Aida camp, the Boys’ School, serves 400 students. This structure was built in 1951 (rehabbed in 96). As it abuts the 10-meter high Israeli "separation wall", the school sits next to an Israeli military watchtower. Teargas canisters & bullet casings are often strewn throughout the schoolyard following clashes between residents and Israeli occupation forces.

The other students who live in Aida attend the UNRWA Coeducational School in Beit Jala. Every day on their way to/from school, these children must pass through checkpoints and experience traumas of military occupation.

UNRWA employs psychological counselors at both schools. In 2003, the Israeli separation wall blocked access to an adjacent open natural space and recreational area once available to Aida residents. Lajee, with help from partners (including Uprising’s own Co-Artistic Director), responded by purchasing land through TABO. With residential support, they built a playground, soccer field, and community garden within the walls of Aida.

This critical, community-led solution is important but alone is not enough. There are no early childhood preschools in Aida camp. This deficiency leaves children at young, vulnerable ages without access to social and intellectual development. It is also detrimental to the women of Aida.

Many women cannot join/rejoin the workforce with limited childcare options. Access to education directly impacts children's development and economic growth for young families. Preschool construction alone provided work for 30 ppl (supporting 140 family members). The materials used in the work - plaster, concrete, steel, fixtures, etc. - are being purchased in Bethlehem, which supports local businesses.

When the school opens in September 2021, it will enroll 50 children. 20% will receive scholarship assistance. Staff will include: Director, 2 teachers, 2 assistant teachers, and a custodian.
