Humanizing the Dehumanized
Using Theater as a Source for MENA & Palestinian Empowerment
Facilitated by Iymen Chehade and Haneen Abdelhafez
For far too long, peoples of the Levant and North Africa, and especially the Palestinians, have been portrayed negatively in Western Art, often to the point of dehumanization. Whether it is racist portrayals in Hollywood films or the microaggressions and stereotypes we see on stage, dehumanization has its consequences, as can be witnessed today by the desensitization of the West to Palestinian suffering. This session will explore how we can collectively use theatre and art as a tool to counter the dehumanization of MENA peoples and work with other historically marginalized communities to build collective strength.
